Executive Education at Tsinghua SEM dates back to 1981, when the Department of Economics and Management Engineering at the time held its first two sessions on “Leadership Research Program on Advanced Corporate Economics and Management”, laying the groundwork for more systematic executive education programs in the future.

The Executive Education Center was established in 2001 at the auspices of former Chinese Premier ZHU Rongji and the Tsinghua SEM Advisory Board, which is constituted by chairpersons, presidents or CEOs of renowned international and domestic companies, deans of the world-leading business schools, leaders of the Chinese government and financial departments. Thanks to the instrumental networking effort by Mr. Henry Paulson, Advisory Board Member of Tsinghua SEM and former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, Tsinghua SEM and Harvard Business School formed partnership in joint development of executive education programs.

China needed top flight business schools to lead the way, but Premier Zhu had concerns about the program at Tsinghua University, known as the MIT of China, and asked if I would evaluate the school and come back to him with ideas for improvement. John Thornton, by then president and co-chief operating officer of Goldman, encouraged me to take on the challenge. We both knew how crucial improving management was—and how devoted Zhu was to Tsinghua, his alma mater. The school needed a new long-range plan that would involve not only shifting to the case study method but also creating China-specific cases. Meantime, I would suggest that SEM launch a reinvigorated executive education program grounded in the practical realities of doing business in China. This would get help to the group that needed it most immediately. With the premier's blessing—and no small sense of responsibility—I grabbed hold of the Tsinghua project with both hands. I approached my friend Kim Clark, then dean of the Harvard Business School, who agreed to have his institution partner with Tsinghua SEM. Harvard brought an unparalleled mastery of the case study method and a sterling reputation for its executive education programs. In a stroke of good fortune, Warren McFarlan, an acclaimed HBS professor and prolific author who had taught for years in HBS’s renowned Advanced Management Program for senior executives, was doing research and teaching in Shanghai. He was eager to pitch in and began developing China-specific case studies while reshaping Tsinghua's executive education program. Consultants at McKinsey & Company, which actively worked with HBS, agreed to develop a five-year strategic plan for Tsinghua.
