Tsinghua-Sotheby’s “Executive Programme in Global Art Markets Collecting and Connoisseurship” Commenced

October 13, 2014, “Executive Programme in Global Art Markets Collecting and Connoisseurship” jointly organised by Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management (SEM), Tsinghua Academy of Arts & Design (AAD) and Sotheby’s Institute of Art had a successful opening at SEM. Prof. Zhu Yan, Deputy Party Secretary of Tsinghua SEM, Prof. Lu Xiaobo, Dean of Tsinghua AAD, Prof. Zhang Gan, Vice Dean of Tsinghua AAD and Ms. Lyn Calzia, Head of Public Programmes at Sotheby's Institute of Art, attended the school opening ceremony.

Prof. Zhu Yan accorded the students a warm welcome to the “Executive Programme in Global Art Markets Collecting and Connoisseurship”. He pointed out that the Chinese art market is in need of art management talents and he wished the students of the first term the best for achievement and enjoyment in the later study. Ms. Lyn Calzia, who came over from London, introduced the rich history and resources of Sotheby’s Institute of Art from an international perspective, and she stressed that the collaboration of the three leading institutes was a precious opportunity. Grounded on art per se, Prof. Zhang Gan talked about the paradox hidden in the prosperity of Chinese contemporary art, and furthermore he indicated that the programme is aimed at cultivating talents who will improve the Chinese art market.

Prior to the formal start of the Beijing module, Ms. Kris Xie, Associate Director of Executive Education, and Prof. Zhang Rui from Tsinghua AAD gave an orientation of the first term of “Executive Programme in Global Art Markets Collecting and Connoisseurship”, whereby Ms. Xie summarised the carefully planned curriculum structure while Prof. Zhang introduced the sophisticated faculty. After the orientation, the students took an active part in the warming-up session. Thought-provoking activities inspired the students and prepared them for the following process of study.

The first Tsinghua SEM-Tsinghua AAD-Sotheby’s Institute “Executive Programme in Global Art Markets Collecting and Connoisseurship” is comprised of six modules, and it is equipped with a solid teaching team. The first module, based in Beijing, is honoured to feature Prof. Liu Lingling, Prof. Zhang Jin, Prof. He Ping and Prof. Zhang Taowei from Tsinghua SEM, Prof. Lu Xiaobo, Dean of Tsinghua AAD, Prof. Zhang Gan, Vice Dean of Tsinghua AAD, Prof. Zhang Rui and Prof. Chen Yanshu from Tsinghua AAD, as well as Prof. Peng Kaiping from the Department of Psychology, Tsinghua University. Additionally, Mr. Wu Jin, reputed art agent will attend the round table conference at this module to share with the students on the strategies for art investment.

The executive programme has a well-knit curriculum schedule. In addition to the theoretical teaching in the classroom, the Beijing module will also guide the students through a series of practical cognition. During the one-week module, students will be provided with a wealth of cultural and artistic resources in Beijing, including a close encounter with the contemporary art in the 798 Art District and an in-depth visit to the Palace Museum for the classical aesthetics. Moreover, the student base consists of elites from a variety of industries both in and out of China. In the warming-up session before the module, the students have started positive communication, which will certainly be beneficial and complementary to the process of study.
